INTRODUCTION

These songs were written over many years; demos, recording sessions and countless refinements. Together they form a diverse collection of stories and characters; some real, some fictional - spanning acoustic ballads, piano-driven songs, driving guitars, horn sections, guest vocalists and everything in between.

The album was produced under the guidance of two-time ARIA and Emmy Award-winning producer Sean Carey (ex Thirsty Merc), whose experience helped shape and refine the recordings.

In April 2026, Starr and Carey travelled to London to attend the mastering sessions at Abbey Road Studios, where award-winning mastering engineer Frank Arkwright (Elton John, George Martin, The Smiths, Roxy Music, Oasis) completed the final masters, bringing clarity, depth and cohesion to the finished album.

Whether you're listening through a hi-fi system, headphones or your car stereo, this 24 bit 48 K download presents the album in its highest available quality.

INFLUENCES

Every songwriter has a musical DNA, and mine can probably be traced back to one afternoon in 1964.

As a young boy, I went to the cinema to see A Hard Day's Night. Like millions of others around the world, I walked in one person and walked out another. The energy, humour, songs and sheer excitement of The Beatles left an impression that never faded. In many ways, a lifelong romance with music was born that day.

The Beatles remain the single greatest influence on my songwriting, not simply because of the quality of their songs, but because they demonstrated that melody, emotion and imagination could all exist within the same three-minute recording. More than sixty years later, those lessons still resonate.

Another towering influence has been Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road has long been one of my favourite albums — not just for its extraordinary collection of songs, but for the sense of occasion surrounding the entire work. The music, sequencing, ambition and even the artwork combined to create an album that felt like a world you could step inside. That idea has always stayed with me.

Along the way I've drawn inspiration from many others; The Bee Gees, Sting, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Carole King, Neil Diamond and countless other songwriters and artists from England, America and Australia. Their styles may differ, but they share a common thread; the power of melody.

For me, melody has always been king. Long after production trends, fashions and genres come and go, a great melody endures. It can make you feel something on a first listen and still reveal new things years later.

If there is one thread connecting the 23 songs on this album, it is that belief. Every song began with the hope of finding a melody worth following.

MEETING THE PRODUCER & MUSICIANS

Whilst every song begins with a songwriter, records are made by people working together, and this album owes an enormous debt to the musicians and producer who helped bring these songs to life.

The journey began with Sean Carey. Sean's musical instincts, attention to detail and commitment to serving the song have been central to every stage of the project. As a two-time ARIA Award winner and Emmy Award recipient, he brought both experience and perspective, but more importantly, he understood what these songs were trying to be. From the earliest demos through to the final mixes, Sean consistently found ways to make the music stronger while never losing sight of the original idea.

One of the great joys of making this album was hearing ideas that had lived in my head and in various demos for many years finally emerging as fully realised recordings in the studio. The challenge was not so much what to play, but how to bring those ideas to life at the highest possible level. It's true that every musician brought ideas of their own to the sessions; ideas that also became part of their performances and, ultimately, part of the fabric of these recordings. Everyone brought skill, feel and vitality.

Sean had an extraordinary ability to understand exactly what I was aiming for and translate those ideas into professional recordings. He is also a master mixer. Listen to the depth, nuance and dynamism across the many different musical styles represented on this album and you'll hear the quality of his work throughout. Time and again the musicians took something that existed as a rough demo and transformed it into a living, breathing record, always exceeding my expectations in the process.
